Intune can push apps to devices automatically, or make them available for users to install on demand — no more walking around installing software by hand.

Steps

1. In the Intune admin center, go to Apps and choose the platform (Windows, iOS, Android, macOS).
2. Click Add, then choose the app type — Microsoft Store app, Line-of-business app (your own .exe/.msi/.intunewin package), or a web link.
3. Fill in the app's details and upload the installer if needed.
4. Go to the Assignments tab and choose how it deploys:
   • Required — installs automatically on assigned devices/users, no action needed.
   • Available for enrolled devices — appears in the Company Portal for users to install themselves if they want it.
   • Uninstall — removes the app from assigned devices.
5. Assign to the appropriate group and save.

Common Questions

How long does it take for a required app to install?

Similar to configuration profiles, it depends on the device's check-in interval — typically within a few hours automatically, or immediately if the user manually syncs from the Company Portal app.

Can I control which version of an app is installed?

For line-of-business apps you package yourself, yes — you control exactly which installer version you upload. For Microsoft Store apps, updates are typically managed by the store itself unless you configure specific update rings.
