What Is Microsoft Intune and What Can It Do for Your Business?
j3mweb Team 08 June 2026 Microsoft Intune

Microsoft Intune is a cloud-based endpoint management platform — it's how IT manages, secures, and configures the phones, tablets, and computers your team uses to access company data.

What Intune Actually Manages

  • Device configuration — enforcing settings like disk encryption, screen lock timeouts, and Wi-Fi/VPN profiles automatically, without visiting each device.
  • Compliance — defining rules a device must meet (up-to-date OS, encryption on, not jailbroken/rooted) before it's allowed to access company email or files.
  • App management — deploying required apps automatically, and controlling how company data can be used inside them, even on personal devices.
  • Remote actions — locking, wiping, or retiring a lost or stolen device, or removing just the company data from a personal phone.

Who Needs It

Any business managing more than a handful of devices — especially with remote or hybrid staff, a bring-your-own-device (BYOD) policy, or compliance requirements around data protection — benefits from Intune instead of manually configuring each device by hand.

Common Questions

Do we need Intune if we already use Microsoft 365?

Basic Microsoft 365 plans don't include Intune by default — it's included in Microsoft 365 Business Premium and various Enterprise Mobility + Security bundles, or it can be added as a standalone license.

Does Intune work on personal (BYOD) devices?

Yes — through app protection policies, Intune can secure and control company data inside apps like Outlook and Teams on a personal phone without managing the entire device or touching personal photos and apps.
